Today's NLS Animal Health, A Division of Henry Schein, is the result of the merger of historical, entrepreneurial companies, which had great influence in the formation of modern veterinary medicine. Barber and Lundberg, an early Oklahoma City enterprise, was founded in 1919 and after thriving on the sale of large animal products in a retail setting, eventually developed into a wholesale distributor in the 1950's. The business of serving veterinarians with supplies continued for Barber and Lundberg until their 1998 merger with A. J. Buck and Son, Inc., a Baltimore firm started by a physician in 1937. A. J. Buck's focus quickly migrated from physician supplies to veterinary goods and serums, specializing in products for the small animal practitioner in the latter 20th century. After the merger of Barber and Lundberg and A. J. Buck, the new company was named National Logistics Services, which soon became NLS Animal Health. Shortly afterward, in May 1999 NLS acquired Sunbelt Veterinary Supply, located in Montgomery, Alabama. The addition of Sunbelt was an ideal geographical fit and gave NLS Animal Health sales coverage in the southeastern USA. Henry Schein, Inc., a primary force in human dental and medical product distribution, had a small veterinary division and was looking to expand. Henry Schein, Inc. acquired NLS Animal Health in April of 2006 to increase it's reach and penetration into the veterinary market with a larger field sales force and added new, significant manufacturer/suppliers that had been available through NLS. Henry Schein brought strong marketing to the mix with extensive catalog and Internet technology plus in-depth telephone sales strength. The evolving veterinary market was ripe for the combination of Henry Schein's technology and the strong field sales force brought by NLS Animal Health. Today, NLS Animal Health, A Division of Henry Schein supplies a full product offering to veterinary clinics, research facilities and animal care facilities. NLS Animal Health supplies pharmaceuticals, biologicals, diagnostics, parasite control products, equipment, instrumentation, wellness and prescription diets and supplies to the veterinary community and related animal health and welfare industries.
