Wall Street Journal: Turn On, Tune Out, Click HereI enjoyed reading Nick Wingfield’s recent story in the the WSJ - Turn On, Tune Out, Click Here “TV Viewers Cut Cable's Cord; Here's What They're Watching Online Instead”Nick’s story enforces thoughts I shared earlier this year in my blog post: Internet TV may pose threat to Cable Companies by 2012.“The Cable Version of “Wireless Conversion” is going to happen. For the past eight years, billions of dollars of fixed-line revenue has been lost by phone companies around the world as their customers have given up using fixed telephone lines in favor of purchasing their primary phone service from wireless carriers. This trend is known as “Wireless Conversion” and this is revenue that will most likely never be replaced by the phone companies. In the near future, I expect cable companies to start to suffer a similar parallel fate as the wireline phone companies. This eventually will mean billions of dollars of revenue loss without any notion of being able to replace the lost revenue. And I expect we will start to see this trend happen first in the 16-24 year old demographic. How does this happen? It happens because there is a portion of the existing 16-24 generation which does not watch traditional broadcast TV and they are not watching Cable TV. What they are watching is TV content repurposed and available on the internet. And when these kids leave home and go off to college, they are not signing up for cable TV service in their dorm rooms. Instead they are continuing to watch their favorite TV shows thanks to BitTorrent or are going online to the network websites to catch up with a missed show or in some cases they are also going to iTunes and purchasing the shows to watch on their video iPods and computers. This trend was one of the inspirations behind the recent launch of PrimeTimeRewind.TV” ---Like it or not, Television has been Disrupted. It is just a matter of time before the media industry recognizes this. Call for Speakers: The Social Media Jungle: Leveraging Social Media for YOU (and your business)I'm looking for a people who would like to be considered discussion leaders at The Social Media Jungle: Leveraging Social Media for YOU (and your business), taking place on November 13th in Melville, New York.In the few weeks since I decided to host an event, the landscape has changed. Friends are now worried about losing their marketing budgets for next year, others are worried about their jobs. The effects of the economy are weighing in on just about everyone. So I decided to re-cast what I was originally planning and instead have a day which will focus on how social media will change the way we work and live. Some of the thoughts include: "How social media will disrupt our workplace by empowering companies to LOWER their burn rate", as well as a discussion on how to be the consummate online networker (as well as in the real world), so friends can get ahead of the curve should things continue to go south. If this is a topic area that you find yourself passionate about, please contact me. As far as the specific topics to be discussed, I'm open to ideas and suggestions. If you would like to be a discussion leader, or if you know someone who you feel could contribute to this , please email: jeffp@pulver.com ASAP. I'm looking to confirm most of the speakers over the next few days and then open up registration for the first 50-75 people who would like to spend the day exploring these topics.Part of the day will be broadcast live from inside the pulverTV studios. I’m also looking for people to volunteer to help produce, direct and host some of the live segments. And if you would like to be one of our event sponsors, just let me know. - - -Tags: social media, facebook, Networking, Jeff PulverShare this post: Digg | del.icio.us | Reddit | Newsvine | Google Bookmark | Yahoo MyWeb | StumbleUponPosted by jeff at 07:48 AM | Permalink| Comments (7)

Life TransitionsThere have been times in my life where I found myself lost in the transition between something I used to do and something I would eventually end up doing. This is what I call a “Life Transition.” This isn’t a change I ever knowingly wished for, but something that happens from time to time. Until recently I never openly spoke about life transitions. But I found it very reassuring that just about everyone experiences these life transitions over the course of their life. It is just that sometimes we don’t realize what is going on while we are having the experience. One thing I have found to be consistent across my life transitions is the underlying feeling of personal freedom which is unleashed as a side effect of the process. Over the years, I have learned to take advantage of this new found freedom to explore new ideas and opportunities. This freedom doesn’t appear at first but only after a period of weeks (sometimes months) where I reflect back, clear my mind and accept what is happening to me and then think about what may be next. This isn’t a time to feel sorry for yourself but rather a time to gain internal strength and confidence for what lies ahead. For myself, I now look at life transitions as a time where I am given an opportunity to reboot myself and redefine who I want to be and what I really wanted to be doing. A time of introspection. A time to grow. A time to transform into the next version of who I am.Tags: leadership, Entrepreneur, Jeff Pulver ---Please consider leaving a comment. Please let me know how you deal with your life transitions and what you have learned from the process. What advise would you offer to someone who is experiencing a life transition for the first time?Share this post: Digg | del.icio.us | Reddit | Newsvine | Google Bookmark | Yahoo MyWeb | StumbleUponPosted by jeff at 10:31 AM | Permalink| Comments (9)

And whether you choose to lead a discussion or a workshop, participate in the Thursday night Gadgethon (a great place to see some of the coolest gadgets around), Friday evening Extravaganza (think User Generated Entertainment), Midnight Cooking Madness or any number of other activities, it was great to see everyone who was a member of the community give something of themselves during the event. This is a philosophy that Yossi actively promotes at many of his events and it was great to see this respected at Stream 08.About half the attending community were from the WPP family of companies and represented some of the most interesting people from the world of advertising. I enjoyed listening to a number of the attending delegates share their perspective about the state of social media and what it meant to their business. I am looking forward to continuing some of the conversations I started over the weeks and months ahead. One of the Stream moments I enjoyed most was when Yossi Vardi introduced Tim O'Reilly at the start of the Extravaganza where Yossi had a chance to acknowledge the influence Tim’s Foo camp had on Kinnernet. I also enjoyed the opportunity to sit down and spend quality time speaking with a number of my friends while attending Stream 08. The fact that Dan Dubno and I had to both fly to Athens to spend quality time together despite the fact we both live in the metro NYC area was a little ironic to me, and a reflection of the times we live in. Getting lost in Athens on Saturday night with Pablo Holman and feeling like we were playing a live version of Zork was an interesting adventure. One of the unexpected realities of Stream 08 was that for the first time since 1998, I ended up being "disconnected" for 3+ days. While my friend Gary Shainberg did everything in his power (and then some) to provide reliable broadband wifi access to the attending delegates, despite his best efforts, it didn’t work out. On the plus side, it turns out the lack of internet access had the effect of making all of the attending delegates more social. And while the thought of not having broadband internet access is usually stressful to me, in the end I think I benefited from being disconnected. And I think that other conference organizers should consider implementing “disconnected hours” in their event schedules.Overall, Stream 08 was a great event and I’m honored to have been invited and have the opportunity to participate in the experience. ---DSC_4455.jpg (Linda Stone, Yossi Vardi and Tim O'Reilly)DSC_4262.jpg (Mark Read)DSC_4370.jpg (Itay Talgam)DSC_4767.jpg (Gary Shainberg on the other side of his 10mm fishbowl lens)DSC_4994.jpg (Dan Dubno)Tags: Athens, WPP, Stream08, Yossi Vardi, Jeff PulverShare this post: Digg | del.icio.us | Reddit | Newsvine | Google Bookmark | Yahoo MyWeb | StumbleUponPosted by jeff at 08:41 AM | Permalink| Comments (1)

In Search Of: Customer Support from YouTubeDuring the past couple of years, I have enjoyed using the services of YouTube. YouTube has been the place I have shared life moments from various events, conferences and concerts that I have been part of. Not only have I enjoyed this service, but my individual YouTube videos are routinely visited by literally thousands of users each week. I continue to be a fan of YouTube. My archives are usually viewable over at http://www.youtube.com/jeffpulver.But, this morning when I tried to log into YouTube, the message “Your account has been permanently disabled” appeared without any previous warning. There has been no communication with me regarding why my account has been disabled. I have built a considerable audience and devoted an extraordinary amount of time and effort to attract viewers to my site and your service. It is confounding as to why this action has been taken. I presume, due to lack of notice, that this is simply a technical error or some other hiccup by YouTube. ---Dear YouTube,I have no clue why my account was disabled. If I have inadvertently done anything to violate YouTube rules, which I don’t believe I have, I hereby apologize and will work to correct any error on my part. But, I suspect the problem is an arbitrary decision or error on your end. Frankly, suddenly losing access to all my video memories without warning or notice is shocking. I request my YouTube account be reinstated. If for some reason that is not possible, I strongly request arranging some method so that I may be able DOWNLOAD and recover the archives of videos that I uploaded during the past couple of years. This is not simply “data”: we’re talking about irreplaceable memories of family and friends. Most of the original source material has disappeared from hard drives from computers that failed. So, YouTube, PLEASE reactive my account and provide me with the ability to DOWNLOAD my archives. I recognize that the hosting service is yours, but those video memories were mine. And now I want them back. --- My hope is that someone who reads my plea might know someone who knows someone at YouTube. And should someone from YouTube read this, please feel free to contact me - jeffp@pulver.com and let me know what is needed in order to reactive my account. My recent experience is a reminder of the downside of using outsourced Web 2.0 services. Maybe what is needed is a digital bank. A place to store my digital images and videos so that the memories are never lost. A place where I don’t have to be worried by anyone judging my content. A place which I can call my digital home. But for now, my hope is that someone from YouTube customer support will find a way to re-enable my YouTube account.
