In the first of the three-part series, it was discussed how rationalization of internal and external factors influence the profitability of a unit. The concept has been carried further in the second article to discuss rationalization on the shop floor and the organization and control systems required for smooth running of production. The third article in the series takes us through workplace engineering to improve productivity using ergonomically designed workplaces and improving work methods.

Ergonomics in Apparel Manufacturing - I
Importance and Impact of Ergonomics
Ergonomics in a simple term means the study of the efficiency of persons in their working environment. Both in Europe and the United States, the use of principles to improve efficiency in the workplace began around the turn of the twentieth century. During World War-I, an interest in the relationship between humans and their work environment arose, but it was only in 1949 when the term ergonomics was first adopted. Thus, ergonomics is relatively a new technological field. Professor Prabir Jana, NIFT, New Delhi, discusses in the first part of the three-part series articles, the importance of ergonomics. N. Karthikeyan and K. Mohankumar from the Bannari Amman Institute of Technology, will discuss the posture and risk analysis of workers and repetitive strain injuries in part II. Part III, again by Prof. Jana, finally guides the industry on how to make occupational health and safety policy for workers.
