That means that they charge you a monthly fee with no promise of results of any kind. Retainer fees vary, but it’s not uncommon for them to range from $3,000 to $10,000 per month, often with a minimum time commitment of six or twelve months. While this model “works” for many large firms, many organizations don’t want to pay out that type of money without being assured of results.When I first started my business, I, too, operated within that model. But as time went on, I got valuable feedback from clients and prospects.First, many people were interested in public relations and publicity, but couldn’t afford my retainer fees. As I looked for resources to refer them to, I realized that there were no low-cost resources that offered a step-by-step, case study, real-world model of how to conduct public relations and publicity efforts. So I decided to create them. Then I learned about a few other public relations firms in the U.S. offering a different publicity model — pay for performance publicity — that only charged clients fees if media placements were obtained. This was exciting! But the more I thought about it, the more I realized that, in fact, many industries have operated successfully for years using this concept, including real estate and recruiting.From the start I decided that unlike other pay for performance publicity firms, my firm would not focus only on getting as many placements as possible for the client. Why? Because most clients don’t have unlimited budgets, and, as in any promotional efforts, because some media targets are more effective for clients than others.
