According to my AVG Anti-Virus and Anti-Spyware software, I should excercise caution with this website - could it have anything to do with its funding of the Mugabe regime? Many apologies - I have been away on holidays and didn't touch a PC. I did take my Blackberry though and thought that I could blog articles from it. It looks like the TypePad application I downloaded for it had some bug in it or could it just have been the sangria!Anyway, this is my first attempt at 'moblogging' and I thought I'd share it with you:This is quite exciting as it is my first blog post from a Blackberry.Having had a couple of problems with the first Typepad App Idownloaded, it now seems that everything is working properly (if youcan read this it does work!).I am now on holidays in Spain andaside from enjoying the break, have had a chance to catch up on somereading. Groundswell, by Charlene Li and Josh Bernoff, offers afascinating look into what companies can achieve, and have beenachieving, with the latest social technologies. Instead of justdetailing all the tactical tools available to marketers, it alsoassesses when, or even if, companies should be considering them.Freakonomics is a book which reminded me very much of the TippingPoint and the Wisdom of Crowds. It offers an alternative view ofeconomics and the authors try to unravel how some statistics -including abortion rates, drug deals, cheating and parenting - mayhave come about.I have also found some good statistics - courtesy of .net magazine -which I will use on my courses. Here's a fascinating one - Google'sshare of the UK market is 87.3% and 17000 copies of Firefox were beingdoaoaded per minute at its peak on 'Download Day'.I'd better fire off an email to TypePad to find out what I can do next. Why has she got worms in her hands?". I just replied that I didn't know, knowing full well how long it would take me to explain that this woman has a worm farm and sells them to people for composting! (what's composting?)I was going to post the AdWords voucher up on the site and send the voucher out to the first person who emailed me. However, Google have gone one better and are now offering £30 credit to anyone who signs up for a new account with them. That means that all those who are coming on my Google AdWords course tomorrow can now add £30 (minus £5 activation fee) to their Google accounts.Request Your AdWords Voucher Now Technorati Tags: google adwords July 22, 2008 in Google Adwords/Adsense | Permalink | Comments (0) | TrackBack (0) Congratulations To Gower Surf Simon Jayham is passionate about surfing, he also loves to write about it on his blog and this combination has brought him more peer recongnition (he regularly features on news sites, like the Times Surf Blog). Just last week Simon's weblog, SurfGSD, became a TypePad Featured Blog - if you're a TypePad blogger, this is indeed the badge that will put a smile on your face! Over the years Simon has managed to combine blog articles with , YouTube videos, Flickr photos and even slideshows on Slide. His site is a nice mixture of articles about places he's visited (Hawaii, Madeira, Portugal), surf stories from around the world, things that interest him - rugby, Glastonbury, local stories - and obviously his own surf school - Gower Surf. It's quite pleasing for me as I introduced him to blogging and TypePad when he came on my eMarketing Award course a couple of years' back. More importantly for Simon it looks like he now has a new buddy at TypePad Headquarters in San Francisco who is a keen surfer! Well done Simon! Many of the things I have been able to do with other mobile devices though, in most cases, have never bothered to try out. I haven't used Twitter too much of late but am now starting to get into it and have set myself a target of a 'twit' a day! Though I will have to be careful about using it when watching the football or after a beer, having read somewhere last week that you can easily damage your 'brand' through Twitter in a drunken moment! I suppose that Blackberrys and beers shouldn't be mixed. I must admit that the best thing so far about the Blackberry is the push email facility, which allows me to receive emails from my main business email address instantly. It means I can respond to important emails as they arrive, throughout the day. In addition, I am able to view all manner of attachements that are sent through to me and, likewise respond straight away. It is a little addictive, though! I was quite a heavy user of the Gmail app on my last phone but have now managed to pretty much move all email contacts over to my @marketingtom.com email address. However, I still regularly check emails through the Blackberry and still get enquiries for Madrid tours (a little sideline of mine) on it. Unlike the old phone the most recent emails appear to be 'pushed' to my phone. TypePad is the only application that so far I have been unable to get working properly - the application says that there is some sort of network problem. I am sure though, that once I get it sorted, it will prove to be my favourite Blackberry app. The issue I had with doing articles from a mobile device previously was the keyboard - the qwerty keyboard I now have doesn't raise that issue. I've also added some of my favourite RSS feeds to the browser application within Blackberry and can now read my favourite blog articles from pretty much anywhere. This is neat - especially if you're trying to kill time when standing in a queue at a bank or the supermarket! So far, I have been mightily impressed by this little device. I can now take my office with me and ensure that clients and colleagues get quick responses to their queries through email. It also means, once I get TypePad sorted, that I can update my blog, add new twits and keep my Facebook profile up-to-date. How did I ever live/work without it before?See AlsoFiling From Flock Technorati Tags: blackberry, gmail, twitter, typepad July 03, 2008 in Mobile Marketing | Permalink | Comments (0) | TrackBack (0) Acer Direct Problems - Follow Up If you remember, last month I wrote an article about my bad customer experience problems with Acer Direct. Well, here's an update on what has transpired since. When I wrote the article I also fired an email off to their customer services department (pointing them to the Acer Direct article) and this is the reply I had: Can you please resend the question you asked 2 months ago? As this was not received by ourselves. So, two emails that I sent to a total of 4 people never got seen! By the end of the afternoon I had received an email from the Managing Director, Nick Glynne, asking me to phone him later in the week.I did and got his voice mail. I have now phoned twice and emailed once, yet still no response. However, I have had a great response from Google!I would now like to explore the results which I have gathered from Google AdWords and Analytics. AdWords DataFor the search terms, "acer uk", "acer laptops", Laptops direct", "acer direct" and acer notebooks" I received a total of 75 clicks from 10,00 page impressions on Google's search network and 23 clicks from 23, 510 impressions on the content network. The click through rate was great but the ad was scheduled to run at various times of the day and certainly got seen by people.Analytics DataHere's the data from Google Analytics: This data is pretty good as it indicates that 119 different individuals saw this article, they took the time to read it: 3 minutes and 58 seconds and 86.61% people went in and back out again. This stat is what I'd expect for an article like this but would be bad if they came in for my other articles!! One further stat shows that these 119 unique views came from 61 "cities" across the UK.Google Search ResultsNow the Google AdWords campaign has taken a break (until I use another Google AdWords voucher!), the organic search results have taken over. Here's the article in position number #8 on Google for the search term "acer direct". On my new Blackberry device, it appears #2, directly under Acer Direct themselves! Well, Evan Williams founder of Twitter says, in an interview on Fast Company, that:We talked about calling it Friend Stalker. We thought that might give the wrong impressionSo, my clients may just be on to something! Does a Deal With Google to Display Paid Results Yesterday, it was announced that Yahoo! would be supplementing its paid search results with those from Google. A press release from Yahoo! states:The agreement enables Yahoo! to run ads supplied by Google alongside Yahoo!'s search results and on some of its web properties in the United States and Canada. And goes on to say:Under the terms of the agreement, Yahoo! will select the search term queries for which - and the pages on which - Yahoo! may offer Google paid search results. Yahoo! will define its users' experience and will determine the number and placement of the results provided by Google and the mix of paid results provided by Panama, Google or other providers. The agreement applies to paid search and content match and does not apply to algorithmic search. The agreement also applies to current partners in Yahoo's publisher network.A statement from Google says (like Yahoo!'s) that the agreement is non-exclusive and means that Yahoo! "could enter into similar arrangements with other companies."It will be interesting to see how this pans out for clients of Yahoo! and Google's PPC technology. Will Google now need to create some new options when selecting ad networks on campaigns? And how long before Yahoo! yields completely to Google and purely displays Google search results?
