Tortoise and Hare: Growth ETFs Outpace Value

 For those investors seeking profit now, rather than after a market recovery, growth-oriented exchange traded funds (ETFs) appear to be outpacing the value. One of the biggest reasons this is happening is because of inflation. Large-cap value companies take a hit from rising input costs when inflation hits.Joanne Von Alroth for Investor’s Business Daily explains that companies can only pass these expenses off to the consumers so much before the prices become too high.The recent credit tightening is also passing along the higher prices to consumers. Health-care and pharmaceutical companies will also play a big role in value-oriented companies taking the upper hand. Europe ETFs Hit By Credit Crisis, and They Aren’t Happy

 Like many areas around the globe, Europe is getting crunched hard by the credit crisis, and exchange traded funds (ETFs) focusing on this region are suffering.Figures released in mid-August showed that the euro-zone economy shriveled to an annualized rate of 0.8% during the second quarter. It was the biggest reversal since 2001.Purchasing and manufacturing data are reflecting this slump, consumer confidence is low, and business confidence within the three largest European economies - Germany, France and Italy - is lagging, reports The Economist. Germany’s downturn is causing particular dismay, since it was one of the few countries that sidestepped the global house-price boom.In general, the sentiment for the global credit crunch is blamed on America. Many Europeans, Germans in particular, feel that they do not deserve this reversal of fortune, as they did not create this situation. But one economist says that Germany profited from the credit-fueled boom and were part of the game.Elsewhere in Europe, housing mania took hold, but Ireland’s bust might be the most dramatic of all.  Market volatility continued in August, which led to mixed performance for major indexes and exchange traded funds (ETFs). The Dow Jones industrial average ended the month down slightly by 0.3%, the S&P 500 was basically flat, but the Nasdaq gained 1.6%.Foreign markets and ETFs lost ground this month, with iShares MSCI South Korea (EWY) down the most at 14.8%, followed by SPDR S&P Emerging Europe (GUR) and Market Vectors Russia (RSX).Commodity-related ETFs also ended the month lower with iShares Silver (SLV) down 23%. Consumer, technology and real estate-related ETFs were higher, with SPDR S&P Homebuilders (XHB) leading the way, up 14.8%.Lower commodity prices and economic woes in Europe helped the dollar this month.Click here to view our ETF performance report to see how the different asset classes, global regions and sectors performed.
