Upcoming Events: WCIT 2008 "Best Ever" The outgoing chairman of WITSA George Newstrom in a May 19 , 2008 press release described WCIT 2008 as the best ever world congress on IT. “By any measure this was the largest and best ever world congress on IT,” he said during the WCIT Opening and Related Events press conference on May 19. Newstrom’s comments were based on the tremendous response of global IT companies in attending this year’s world congress on IT in Kuala Lumpur. He was also impressed by the fact that WCIT 2008 garnered more than US$10 million of sponsorship in cash and in kind. The WITSA chairman noted that at WCIT 2008, there are: · More than 70 institutional partners; · More than 90 participating countries; · More than 100 speakers; · More than 3000 delegates; · More than 2000 business-to-business meetings; · More than 50,000 participants; and · 100,000 square feet of exhibition space. The Netherlands will host 2010 ICT 'Olympics' Handover Ceremony in Malaysia, go ahead for WCIT2010. On May 21, 2008, the last day of WCIT 2008 in Kuala Lumpur, Dutch State Secretary Frank Heemskerk, ICT~Office chairman Henk Broeders and Amsterdam alderman Lodewijk Asscher symbolically took over the WCIT chairmanship from the Malaysians. The 17th World Congress on Information Technology - often referred to as the ICT 'Olympics' - will be held in Amsterdam in 2010. The symbolic handover of this prestigious event was the formal go ahead for the Dutch to start preparations for the next edition of the world's most important ICT event. Bermuda Awarded GPPC 2009 The Business Technology Division of the Bermuda Chamber of Commerce (URL) on November 4, 2007 was selected to host the 2009 Global Public Policy Conference (GPPC 2009). With the theme "Business Technology: An Enabler in Your Economy", the event is tentatively scheduled to take place at the Fairmont Southampton in Bermuda on November 1-3, 2009 and will coincide with the 400th Anniversary of the first Bermudan settlements. In cooperation with the Bermudan Ministry of the Environment, Telecommunications and E-Commerce, the Business Technology Division will host some 500 senior ICT executives, government officials and policy-makers from more than 50 countries. GPPC 2007 Concludes With a Great Program WITSA's 2007 Global Public Policy Conference (GPPC 2007) concluded successfully on November 6, ending an event with a great program and many fascinating and renowned speakers. The Conference opened by H.E.  Dr. Tarek Kamel, Egyptian Minister of Communications and IT, and featured plenary sessions on International ICT Trade; ICT for Development; Internet Governance; E-Environment; E-Government; Information Security and Privacy; Innovation; and Future of the ICT Industry. WITSA eGovernment Survey - Key Findings Please see our new report on the key findings, including responses from 36 countries [PDF]. It was interesting to note that the problems and experiences shared between the countries were remarkably similar in both developed and underdeveloped economies, and that most have made impressive advancements in the implementation of eGovernment over the past few years. WITSA is also extremely pleased that our eGov Project Leader, Ms. Shauneen Furlong, on February 15, 2007, received an IBM PhD Fellowship. WITSA Announces 2008 Global ICT Excellence Award Winners At the May 20, 2008 WCIT 2008 Gala Dinner, WITSA announced seven winners of the 2008 Global ICT Excellence Awards, representing six countries from Europe, Asia Pacific, and North America. Every two years, WITSA recognizes select organizations whose use of information technology has exhibited exceptional achievement within three broad categories: Public Sector Excellence, Private Sector Excellence, and Digital Opportunity. WITSA Welcomes new Members from Cambodia, Pakistan and South Africa The WITSA General Assembly, at its May 18, 2008 meeting in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, granted WITSA membership to the ICT Association of Cambodia (ICT:CAM); the Pakistan Software Houses Association (P@SHA); and the IT Association of South Africa. WITSA Contributions to IGF 2007 On November 13, 2007, as part of the Rio de Janeiro Internet Governance Forum (IGF) proceedings, WITSA and four other organizations organized a workshop on access entitled "Qualifying, Quantifying, and Meeting the Challenge of Internet Access Costs". The discussion highlighted the fact that access to the information infrastructure and ICT and Internet capabilities is one of the most fundamental measure of a society’s ability to grow its economy, enhance its social well-being, and integrate itself with the global economy.
