In short, there is no "Holy Grail". The best one can hope for is to come close. If a second indicator is used in conjunction with the first, this may help to improve your odds in staying on the right side of the market or stock of choice. We all know the three key words in real estate - location, location, location. The three key words in technical analysis might be - confirmation, confirmation, confirmation.Before one blindly buys a stock based on its instant snapshot, one has to step back and examine "the big picture". Questions you should be asking yourself are: 1) Are most stocks in this industry group on the verge of giving buy signals? If so, this helps confirm your decision. 2) Is the Exchange Traded Fund for this industry group also close to confirming a buy? And 3) is the overall stock market in synchronization with your buy?Item (3) also needs a little further explanation. If the stock market is taking some serious hits, some stocks/industry groups may be running counter-cyclical to the trend. For example, as inflation rumors abound and the actual Producer Price Index (PPI) numbers lend credence to the rumors, the value of gold related issues and securities tends to go up.Up until recently, the price of crude oil has moved opposite to that of the Dow Jones Industrial Average also. When crude started moving up in price, the DJIA headed south. Conversely, when the price of crude declined, the Dow tended to rally. However, over the last several weeks, as the price of crude has fallen off a cliff, the Dow disassociated itself from crude and has chosen to react to other news items.But, we have digressed from our main topic. What sort of indicator would we use to confirm our buy or sell signal. Using Telechart 2007, we can try many of their built-in indicators in a matter of minutes. Or one could experiment with a custom indicator or two. For those of you that are mathematically inclined, a custom indicator allows you to build your own indicator from scratch or make a hybrid indicator from a combination of indicators and formulas. (Aren’t you glad you paid attention in algebra class now?)For example, look at the buy signals for Wachovia given on the chart below. The first three signals were excellent. The fourth signal, on the surface, appears to be a valid signal. However, let us assume we bought on the buy signal given on May 29, 2008 at a price of $24.15.Look at the chart a scant 31 trading days later. It appears our buy signal broke down as our stock has lost over 62% in value (shown by red arrow) and trading at $9.08 on July 15, 2008!Now, let us add in a confirming indicator. Suppose we wait until the 5-day moving average crossed above the 13-day moving average. We then would not have bought until the red 5-day average crossed above the green 13-day average when the price was $16.79 saving you the anguish of watching the price erode from $24.15 into the mid-teens.The upshot is that one cannot blithely buy or sell a stock based on a single indicator. There is no guarantee that by adding a second or third indicator to your investment strategy that your success ratio will improve but they can certainly improve your odds.JGG
