Sanderson Farms, Inc. filed a Form S-3 "shelf" Registration Statement with the SEC to register for possible future sale shares of the company's common and/or preferred stock at an aggregate offering price not to exceed $1 billion. Joe F. Sanderson, Jr., chairman and chief executive officer of Sanderson Farms, Inc. stated, "Our purpose with this filing is to make available to the Company shares that could be used in connection with future acquisitions and other strategic opportunities as they may present themselves. We have no current agreements, plans or discussions to offer any of the registered shares for sale. Our purpose does not include raising cash solely for liquidity, as the Company's financial position remains strong."
International News
Mexican supermarket operator Comercial Mexicana requested bankruptcy protection against creditors because it was unable to make debt payments due to a recent decline in the peso, according to Reuters.
Health News
Moderate consumption of red wine may reduce the risk of lung cancer in men by as much as 60%, according to findings published in Cancer Epidemiology, Biomarkers & Prevention. The study claims to be the first to take into account such lung cancer-related factors such as passive smoking, socio-economic status and dietary intake, all of which are associated with alcoholic intake, according to researchers from the Kasier Permanente Department of Research and Evaluation, reported Beverage Daily.
Washington News
FDA needs to better leverage resources, improve oversight and effectively use available data to help consumers select healthy foods, according to a report from the Government Accountability Office (GAO). GAO notes that FDA has little assurance that companies comply with food labeling laws and regulations for, among other things, preventing false or misleading labeling. GAO made several recommendation as well.
Market News
The U.S. all orange forecast for the 2008-09 season is 9.19 million tons, down 10% from the 2007-08 final utilization. Florida's all orange forecast, at 166 million boxes, decreased 2% from last season's final utilization. The FCOJ yield forecast for the 2008-09 season, at 1.59 gallons per box at 42.0 degrees Brix, is 5% lower than last season's final yield of 1.67 gallons per box. Meanwhile, corn production is forecast at 12.2 billion bushels, up 1% from last month but 7% below 2007.
