Het medicijn wordt tegenwoordig in vele varianten op markt gebracht, al dan niet in combinatie met andere middelen. De jaarproductie bedraagt circa 40.000 ton.','Met de komst van de multiculturele samenleving schuiven we steeds vaker aan bij de Surinamer, de Thai, de Turk of de Kantonees. Het lijkt er dan ook op dat het hoofdbestanddeel van de aardappel, zetmeel, steeds belangrijker wordt in toepassingen die niets maar dan ook niets met voedsel te maken hebben.\n\nZo wordt zetmeel bijvoorbeeld gebruikt als kleefstof in lijm en als stijfsel in kleding. Op basis van zetmeel maken inventieve bedrijven verschillende producten, bijvoorbeeld voor gebruik in de papierindustrie of waterzuivering.','Chemici hebben een biologisch afbreekbaar en dus minder milieubelastend alternatief gevonden voor de plastic tas. Zij hebben een bioplastic ontwikkeld, dat gemaakt wordt van zetmeel uit aardappels of maïs.\n\nBioplastic wordt op natuurlijke wijze afgebroken en levert dus minder belasting voor onze planeet dan het gebruik van normaal plastic.','Tegenwoordig worden aan verf voor toepassingen binnenshuis soms speciale stoffen toegevoegd. Zo bestaat er waterafstotende verf voor in de badkamer en keuken, verf met metaaldeeltjes om de geverfde muur als magneetbord te gebruiken, of schoolbordverf die een muur met krijt beschrijfbaar maakt.','Bijna iedereen heeft er minimaal één van in de kast hangen: de spijkerbroek. Karakteristiek aan de spijkerbroek is de kleur: indigo blauw. Indigo is één van de oudste natuurlijke kleurstoffen. Tot 1870 werd indigo gewonnen uit planten. Daarna ontdekte de Duitse chemicus Adolf van Baeyer de synthetische indigo. BASF maakte hier vervolgens een commercieel product van.\n \nIn 1983 ontdekten Amerikaanse wetenschappers een manier om indigo via bacteriën te maken. Dit maakte het productieproces nog eenvoudiger.','Bijna iedereen wil een mooie, gezonde bruine kleur op zijn huid. Een goede zonnebrand is echter noodzakelijk als er veel tijd in de zon wordt doorgebracht. Chemische stoffen in de crème nemen gelukkig een deel van de schadelijke UV-straling op en beschermen zo voor bepaalde tijd tegen verbranden.','In kleding kan polyamide, nylon en polyester zitten.
