Summary: Ben & Jerry's has received federal permission to install the first hydrocarbon-based freezers in the United States. The freezers use propane, a hydrocarbon, as a refrigerant instead of hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs), which are thousands of times more potent than carbon dioxide.
EPA Launches New Chemical Assessment and Management Efforts

Summary: As part of the EPA's Chemical Assessment and Management Program (ChAMP), EPA has announced its intent to update the current Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA) Inventory of industrial chemicals by "resetting" it to more accurately reflect the chemicals in commerce. EPA also plans to develop a program to challenge the U.S. chemical industry to provide health and safety information on inorganic high-production volume (HPV) chemicals. These efforts will enhance the agency's efforts to assess and manage the chemicals presently in commerce and are based on feedback from a broad group of stakeholders.
IL: Illinois Passes E-Waste Legislation

Summary: Illinois Governor Rod Blagojevich has signed legislation that requires electronics manufactures to collect, recycle or reuse their products. Senate Bill 2313 requires manufacturers to provide free collection services to consumers, yet allows them to partner with retailers and local governments to sponsor collection events.
UT: Utah's state fish avoids federal protection

Summary: Utah's state fish will not be given protection under the Endangered Species Act. Though the decision didn't sit well with a conservation group, local fish officials on Tuesday called it a recognition of a decade of work and hundreds of thousands of dollars spent in Utah Valley and around the state to boost populations of the Bonneville cutthroat trout.
