Performance Reviews Often Skip Ethics, HR Professionals SayLess than half of organizations include ethical conduct in employee appraisalsAlexandria, VA, June 12, 2008 – In a new national survey, only 43 percent of human resources professionals said their organizations include ethical conduct as part of employees' performance appraisals.In the study released jointly today by the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) and the Ethics Resource Center (ERC), human resource professionals said they are their organizations' primary resource for ethics-related issues, and they help create ethics policies. But most don't feel that they are truly part of the ethics infrastructure. Instead, they are just asked to "clean up" the situations caused by ethics violations.The SHRM/ERC study, The Ethics Landscape in American Business, was conducted for the third time since 1997. It is the only measure of its kind—one that examines the attitudes of human resource professionals about ethics in their workplace.Click here to read more.MERCK'S CHIEF ETHICS OFFICERSELECTED TO LEAD ERC FELLOWS Jacqueline E. Brevard, vice president and chief ethics and compliance officer of Merck & Co., Inc., has been selected as chair of the Ethics Resource Center's highly regarded Fellows program, ERC President Patricia J. Harned announced May 13. Brevard, who is a founding member of the Fellows and serves on its advisory board, will serve a two-year term.The Fellows include senior ethics and compliance officers from business, government and nonprofits, as well as college and university-level academics. The program, which typically numbers about 60 participants, focuses on research and writing about emerging ethics and compliance issues, principles and best practices."Our Fellows are an elite group of leaders who collectively identify the challenges that will confront their organizations in the next five to 10 years, and they equip themselves with strategies to help their organizations respond with the highest integrity," Harned said. "I can think of no better individual to lead this group. Jacquie has been a Fellow since the inception of the program, and as a senior executive herself, I am confident that she will bring a strong sense of direction and purpose to the role.""Merck supports the mission of the ERC Fellows Program of researching, developing and advocating for strong ethical standards and practices," said Brevard. The study, which has received international media attention, is a detailed examination of ethics programs and the importance of ethical culture in organizations.
